Your Role
This director-level position will be the lead attorney and primary legal contact supporting the commercial contracting functions (other than real estate, construction and M&A contracts) across the Casey’s enterprise. In this role, you will be a highly visible, impactful member of the Legal Team and will serve as a strategic partner and adviser throughout the company.
What You’ll Do
Build trusted strategic relationships throughout all levels, teams and functions across Casey’s.
Draft, review, negotiate and provide legal support for a wide variety of commercial contracts, including for technology (hardware and software), food, groceries and general merchandise, age-restricted products, consumer packaged goods, distribution activities, digital and traditional marketing/advertising, consulting and professional services, etc.
Identify, develop and implement best practices and improvements to the contracting process, contract management strategy and workflows, including creating and revising standard contract terms and templates, contract review processes and guidelines, etc.
Proactively engage and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to develop appropriate contract-related risk tolerances and to advise them on contract terms and obligations, interpretations, commercial implications, business risks and related regulatory requirements.
Work closely with internal legal and other team members for the development and inclusion of specialized contract provisions (i.e., insurance, food safety, data security, supplier guidelines, etc.).
Manage all third-party contract support, including temps and outside counsel, as necessary.
Provide general legal support and guidance to the Procurement Team and assist them in the evaluation and development of a formal contract management platform.
Support contract-related M&A due diligence activities.

The position will be primarily based out of the Casey’s Store Support Center in Ankeny, Iowa (Des Moines metro area). Relocation assistance will be provided.

Requirements
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in good standing in at least one US jurisdiction.
Minimum 7 years of commercial, contracts and/or general business experience, with significant drafting and negotiation experience. In-house experience preferred, but not required.
Ability to work independently, take ownership, and seek advice when necessary, all with a practical, cooperative, low-ego approach and can-do attitude.
Experience establishing relationships across multiple business units and/or teams and weighing business needs with legal and commercial risks.
Strong presentation and communication skills along with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the company.
Willingness and patience to learn all areas of the business, new subject matters, etc.
